Play therapy

Play therapy is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy specially designed for young children.

Unlike adults, children are not sufficiently developed to be able to put their feelings into words.  Instead, they use a different language, 'acting out' their confusing or painful feelings. This can manifest in a variety of ways - aggression, anxiety, defiance, difficulty making or keeping friends, disruption and withdrawal. These symptomatic behaviours are among the many ways through which a child can signal to us that something is not right.

By using play and creativity, which is a child's natural form of expression, within the safety and support of the therapeutic framework, children can process difficult feelings, and explore challenging experiences safely and at their own pace. Through the symbolic language of play and the creative arts, the brain begins to process and reorganize emotional experiences, reducing stress responses, building new neural connections, and strengthening emotional regulation. Over time, children become better able to express themselves, manage emotions, and feel more secure in themselves and their relationships.

All sessions are  £40 per session (50 mins).

Creative Arts Therapy with 12- 18 year olds

Creative Arts therapy offers a different approach to the usual traditional talking therapies offered to most young people. Instead of having to verbalise often confusing and painful feelings, young people can use the arts to express themselves in a way that language often hinders. Through this process, and through the safety and non-judgement of the therapeutic relationship, young people can safely externalise what has hitherto been internalised, promoting healing, acceptance and understanding.

This type of therapy does not require your child be 'good at art'. It is the therapeutic process that is important and not the end product.

Parent-Child Attachment Play

We offer a 10 hour Parent-Child Attachment Play course (PCAP) for parents or carers of 4 -11 year olds who are struggling, for whatever reason, in having a rewarding and positive relationship with their child. The course takes place face to face initially and then over the phone, as you begin to implement the skills you have learnt with the therapist, with your child at home. This is a stand alone course where we work with the parent only. Occasionally, we might suggest it to the parents of our child clients if we deem it appropriate.

Effective results

Research indicates that between 74% and 83% of children who undergo Play Therapy experience improvements in their behaviour and emotional well-being. Kimbolton Creative Therapy is committed to providing evidence-based interventions that make a positive difference in the lives of children and their families.

"Kimbolton Creative Therapy has been a lifeline for our family. We've seen such positive changes in our child's behaviour and emotional well-being."
